Comedians in Bars Drinking Alcohol

This weekly blog series features interviews taking place at the Dallas Comedy House (DCH) open mic with me and some of the funniest stand-up comedians in the area, most of whom just happen to be my best friends! Read to learn about your favorite local funny people and about the curious emotional makeup of people who like to go onstage alone every night to get laughed at. Paul Varghese: The Workin'est Comic in Dallas

Paul Varghese is the most successful comic in town, probably even in Texas. Quickly discovered and groomed by the clubs in the metroplex as a phenomenally gifted young stand-up, Varghese has spent the past 14 years honing his craft and has made a great career as a comedian, which is for most of us, "The Dream." What separates Varghese is clear–his relentless energy and laser focus are noticeable within minutes of talking to him, particularly about stand-up. He is constantly wired and engaged. What is special about Varghese is his drive–the drive that has powered him through navigating the difficult comedy business and building a career all on his own without representation; the drive he brings onstage along with a steady stream of fresh jokes and hilarious, wild-eyed performances; and the drive to commit to stand-up in a way that no one else I know has done or perhaps even is capable of. I sat down with Varghese at what is technically a bar and had him do the thing he does best–talk about the thing he gets paid to do–comedy. Filmed as always by Sean "Really Good at Filming Stuff" Alexander (nickname mine).
