This weekly blog series features interviews taking place at the Dallas Comedy House (DCH) open mic with me and some of the funniest stand-up comedians in the area, most of whom just happen to be my best friends! Read to learn about your favorite local funny people and about the curious emotional makeup of people who like to go onstage alone every night to get laughed at. Justin James: This Charming Man
Justin James is a comic most distinct for his swagger. His self-assured delivery and charismatic presence have long made him a stand out among stand-ups. James' commitment to professionalism extends also to his set's content. While many of us struggle and meander onstage at open mics as we try to find the right words to express ourselves in the moment, James always delivers tight and prepared jokes. He always attempts to get the most laughs out of the least words possible, which is pretty much the definition of good comedy writing. James' gleeful and silly one-liners about being a stoner chef or stopping by a quinceañera have taken a turn for the more serious as of late, as he pushes himself to be more open and honest as an entertainer and a human being. I sat down with James at the back bar of Hyena's Comedy Nightclub in Dallas, and we shot the sh** and drank beer out of martini glasses. Filmed by wunderkind, auteur, and all around visionary Sean Alexander of CREWW Media.
