Podcast Rec No. 2: “How Did This Get Made?”

How Did This Get Made?Sometimes, movies can be so bad they’re good. However, that doesn’t change the fact those movies are just bad. Available on the Earwolf Podcast Network, How Did This Get Made? is a celebration of bad decisions in filmmaking. The show is hosted by comic actors Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael, and Jason Mantzoukas, all of whom try to fathom what they just watched by cracking jokes. There are often guest hosts, such as Brian Posehn, Adam Scott, and my personal favorite, Paul F. Thompkins. And they ask the most important question: Would any of these films have been better with the star power of Nick Cage? Episode to start with: "No Holds Barred LIVE! (w/ Thomas Lennon)."

Honestly, you should probably start with an episode that features one of the movies you've seen. For example, I started with “Jack Frost LIVE,” because I’ve seen it and I remember how bad it is. That being said, I'm telling you to start with "No Holds Barred LIVE!" This is because this is a movie you don’t necessarily need to see. I mean, it stars Hulk Hogan. That's really all you need to know, because that's the only part that makes sense. I mean, the plot is about a wrestler who is goaded into competing in violent televised match called the “Battle of the Tough Guys?” As Mantzoukas often says on this show, it’s “bonkers.” The guest host is Thomas Lennon, actor/writer of Reno 911!, who provides fantastic vocal impressions of the Hulkster and other cast members. It was recorded live at the Largo theatre in Los Angeles, so the sound quality may not be fantastic, but the participation of the audience heightens the experience.

Running Time: 1 hour and 40 minutes. It’s a long episode, but worth every minute of it. Listen to it at work or a commute ruined by rush hour traffic to get a boost in your mood.

Podcast Rec No. 1: “The Black List Table Reads”

The Black List Table ReadsIf you’re unfamiliar with the Black List, it is a foundation that collects the best unproduced screenplays and allows them to be seen by producers and filmmakers. Then a select amount of unproduced scripts are collected into a “best of the best” list for the year. Some of the screenplays featured on the Black List, like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Imitation Game,  have been critically acclaimed and/or nominated or winners of prestigious awards. In April 2015, Wolfpop released the first episode of “The Black List Table Reads” as hosted by Black List founder, Franklin Leonard. As the title suggests, each episode is a table read of an unknown work featured on the list, creating “ear movies.” Casts include a range of talented actors from Frankie and Grace’s June Diane Raphael to Glee’s Darren Criss to Emmy-nominated Fargo actor Colin Hanks. The feed is also supplemented with interviews of various screenwriters, discussing life in Hollywood, their inspirations, and writing processes.

Which episode to start with: #101, “Balls Out” by Malcolm Spellman and Tim Talbot.

Written during the 2008 Writer’s Strike, Balls Out is an insane comedy with some of the raunchiest and obscene comedy that has been put on paper. The plot centers on protagonist Jim who, after having a near-death experience, decides to treat life the way it treated him… like his bitch. Originally following the four-part serial format, it was edited and re-released as one audio for non-stop laughter. The table read features the talents of comedic actors Paul Scheer, Jason Mantzoukas, and Casey Wilson. Ear Movie Rating: R, for coarse language, substance abuse, sexual references and content, and minor violence.
